Firstly Joshua Robinson (Right) and Liam Wraxton (Left) attended the 1110 District Rotary Youth Leaders Award weekend, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Ryde, held at Avon Tyrrell. Joshua gave a short talk to the Club about his experiences of the weekend, which gave exposure to leadership, team working and personal physical skills. Both Joshua and Liam agreed that it proved to be a very valuable weekend to them and would thoroughly recommend it to others, they are pictured being presented with certificates of attendance by Ryde Rotary Club President Neil Gurney.
Secondly Caitlin Day pictured with Ryde Rotary Club President Neil Gurney was given the opportunity to attend a four week course at the University of Sienna, Italy. Caitlin went to the University of Sienna to study a four week course in Italian culture and food. Her course was followed by a weeks holiday with a Rotaract Family in Rome. Caitlin reported to the Club that the course was extremely entertaining and educational, one that she would recommend to any of her friends. The exchange started with an approach from the Italian Rotary Club Roma Sud Ovest, who wished to place their Italian student Andrej Vescovi on the Island to gain experience of the English language, this was carried out at the nationally renowned Ventnor Botanic Gardens with the help of its manager Chris Kidd. Andrej was kindly hosted by local family Simon and Kate Goodwin who are friends of the Botanic Gardens.
Andrej is pictured at a Rotary a garden party where he is pictured enjoying the Island beer Ducks Folly and and a barbeque.
Thirdly Katie Churchill (Left) and Abigail Whiteley (Right) pictured with Ryde Rotary Club President Neil Gurney reported on their week in France. This came as the prize for winning a French speaking competition in conjunction with our twin Club in France, the Club of Chateau du Loir. Each year the visiting Club judges the speaking talents 16-18 year old students from the home based area. The two winners travel to the host Club, spending a week with a family of the Club.
During this time they learn to improve their language skills and how families of the other country live different lifestyles to those they are used to. Katie and Abigail had not met prior to the competition, but are now firm friends, which they expect to continue into the future. They also found the experience very rewarding and would recommend it to their friends.
