Something new for our Club - a Football Tournament which took place at the Hampshire F A complex at Winklebury Way. Featuring an exhibition match played by Basingstoke Football Club and opportunities for youngsters to then show off their skills and finally a penalty shoot out challenge. Greatly enjoyed by those who participated, it is intended that this will become an annual event
This well attended meeting was held at the Restaurant at Basingstoke College of Technology on the evening of 9 November. Not only did it give us the opportunity of thanking our Business Partners but it also gave an opportunity to a number of charities to talk about what they do in our community. Our President presented certificates to those Partners who were able to attend on the evening
Five of us went to the game at the Winklebury Sports Complex - President ‘Tunde, Samir Chekini, Jim London, Nick Stevens and Will Rae.
It was a great afternoon where we were received by the Chairman of Town, Jack Miller and manager Dan Brownlie. We presented Dan with a President’s Special Recognition Award for guiding the team to promotion last season. Our President ‘Tunde, supported by members Jim London and Nick Stevens made the presentation just before kickoff in front of an unusually high 1,100 heavy spectators in the stands.
Dan Brownlie, manager of Basingstoke Town FC, whose father Ian was also a Rotarian, expressed delight at the recognition and thanked us for making such a gesture. He said ‘I have won a few but my mom will be particularly proud of this one’.
Chairman Jack Miller acknowledged the work we are doing and called on us to talk some more to explore ways of working jointly to touch and impact the community through projects.
As for the match itself, it ended in a pulsating 3-3, a score line which many agreed was worthy and reflective of the performance of both teams.”
Members and friends worked a six hour shift at the Coronavirus hub at Chineham marshalling those arriving for their jab on 17 December. The two day event had been arranged by the CCG for the over 80's. We, together with the other Rotary Clubs in N.Hants, had been approached to help with dealing with parking and assisting people in to the building where the vaccinations were being carried out by teams from local GP practices
Our Club member, Michele, was one of the many nurses administering the vaccination whilst we were carrying out our marshalling duties. Seen here with marshall Richard at the start of our shift.
Our recent Writing Competition - "A Winter to Remember" for Primary Schools in our area attracted 31 entries from 7 schools. It is hoped that we may be able to share the winning articles in the local newspapers and also incorporate all the entries in to a booklet in the future
We have made several donations to Spotlight during this difficult year to help them with their good work in providing food parcels to needy families in Basingstoke.
Since the original lockdown in March of this year we have managed to hold our regular Club meetings via Zoom. We have enjoyed some interesting speakers, taken part in quizzes, held an enjoyable "cocktail evening" and conducted our Business meetings in the normal way.
