Born at the height of apartheid in South Africa, Revd. Jongi grew up under a political regime that denied racial justice and equality to the vast majority of the population in the country.
The oppression of black people persuaded him to pursue a legal career so that he could fight the system from within; assisting people with little or no legal representation under apartheid.
Working in Cape Town he developed skills in peace monitoring and conflict resolution, becoming a respected peace keeper and trainer, which also saw him working in the neighbouring countries of Swaziland and Lesotho.
Because of the nature of his work he was twice imprisoned under the fourteen day detention laws, cited as
