Rotary Young Leadership Awards,or RYLA is a leadership development programme run by Rotary for young adults. The aim is to unlock their potential.

RYLA programmes lasts 7 days in Scotland and includes a range of activities from hands on physical challenges to presentations and workshops. During a RYLA programme among other things they will gain exposure to leadership scenarios, develop their team working skills , meet new people and make lasting friendships.
The Rotary Club of Broughty Ferry has supported the RYLA programme for many years sending pupils from local secondary schools to the RYLA camps in Nethybridge each summer. This year the three successful pupils all came from Craigie High School. They were Kayleigh Paley , Ahmad Drammer, and Jack Richardi. It was agreed with the pupils at the time of their interviews that once they had been on the programme that they would come to the club and each give a presentation on their RYLA experience.
On Monday 17th September both Kayleigh and Ahmad ( unfortunately Jack had taken ill on that day) along with their mothers, joined us at our club meeting in the Woodlands Hotel. Kayleigh and Ahmad both gave very interesting presentations which included the challenges they had faced and overcome, the development of their team, working and leadership skills and the new friendships that they had made.
We were delighted that on that evening we were also joined by Mrs Elizabeth Walker, Deputy Head of Craigie High School and Mr Jim Houston who is the Rotary District Officer for RYLA and the person who organises the RYLA camps in Nethybridge.
It was clear from speaking to Kayleigh and Ahmad and their parents how much the young people had gained from taking part in RYLA and how worthwhile is the whole programme. At the end of the evening they were presented with their RYLA Certificates.
For our members, this is one of the highlights of the year when young people come and speak about their RYLA experience. RYLA is a Rotary programme that the club has supported over many years and will continue to support over the years. We are hoping to sponsor four pupils in 2019 and will be approaching schools soon to invite prospective applicants. We are in District 1010 for Rotary and this runs up the east coast from us over the North of Scotland and to the Northern Isles, so our students come from a large geographical area, with the costs for students involved, paid for by each local Rotary Club.
