Sponsored Lecture

Thurso Rotary Club Sponsored Lecture.

Everest - 'Just for the love of it'

From time to time Thurso Rotary Club sponsors a lecture by a person of significance in the field of exploration, science or technology.  This year the Club has been fortunate to engage a speaker of international importance. Cathy O'Dowd was the first woman to climb Mount Everest from both the south and north sides.  There can be no doubt that this is a magnificent achievement and that Cathy is someone whose story, told by herself, is informative and exciting.

Though Everest featured in her talk the main emphasis was on her expedition to the ninth highest peak in the world and one of the most difficult, Nanga Parbat in Pakistan. In vivid detail and with the use of slides she described the challenges of the climb.  An audience of about 80 were entranced by her wonderful delivery and fascinatiing descriptions of events on the mountain.
