Thursday July 27th saw the first of two sailing days organised by the Rotary Club of Princes Risborough for Bucks Young Carers, held at the Bury Lake Young Mariners club near Ricksmanworth.
On August 1st, the second day took place and fortunately, the weather was perfect - warm, sunny and some wind, luckily missing the adjacent rainy days.
Organised by Rotarian Hugh Poulton, in conjunction with Bucks County, the first day saw 15 young people from Aylesbury area taking part whereas the second day featured young carers from the High Wycombe area.
On both days, the morning involved a one hour sailing experience and the afternoon an exercise in paddling and water games. None of the young people had been on the water before, although some of them spent a brief spell in the water!
Apart from organising the event, a small select team of Rotarians provided refreshments, the highlight being a barbecue lunch with pizza, with melon as a healthy option to (perhaps) offset the ice-creams served before the day concluded around 3:30 pm.
Tesco in Princes Risborough supported the sailing days by kindly providing some of the lunchtime food and drink.
The Carers Bucks staff were full of praise for the Rotary initiative, which has given these often underprivileged Young Carers some respite from their difficult home lives and helped them to make new friends.
