Polio eradication

Young children proudly show their 'purple pinkies', received after immunisation against polio

After 25 years of hard work, Rotary and its partners are on the brink of eradicating this tenacious disease from the world.

India was taken off the endemic countries list by the World Health Organisation on February 25th 2012 after no reported cases of the disease for a whole year, thanks to Rotarians doing hands-on volunteering at national immunisation days.

Thanks to Rotary there are now just 3 polio-endemic countries (Afghanistan, Nigeria, Pakistan), the lowest in human history.

Nearly 119,000 Rotarians from around the world have helped administer the vaccine to children, organize free health camps and polio awareness rallies, and distribute banners, caps, comic books, and other items.
