Action: Club Rotarians

With just over two months to go until the 85th Rotary Conference, the 20th in Bournemouth, members are being reminded to register now. This year's gathering, from 16th to 18th of April in the stunning Bournemouth International Centre, promises to be a magical affair with entertainment from Alistair McGowan and Paul Daniels, as well as celebrating Rotary's Young Citizen Award.

Alongside Rotary GB&I President David Fowler, the Bournemouth Conference will be welcoming President of Rotary International, John Kenny, and his wife, June. Uniquely, Rotary GB&I is the only Conference which all RI Presidents attend. Having President John Kenny as both an honoured guest and also a British RI President is a double delight and worthy of celebration. John and June will be mingling with guests, providing an excellent opportunity to chat about the future of Rotary.

For our new members, Conference is the perfect opportunity to meet the rest of the Rotary family and share ideas for new projects. Those who have attended previously will know that Conference is about socialising, celebrating the magic of Rotary and looking forward to a productive year.

Confirmed guests are:
″ Anne Lee Hussey, polio survivor, who is flying across from America to join us for the weekend.
″ The greatly respected D.R. Mehta, founder & chief patron of Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti, which is the parent organisation for the world-famous Jaipur Foot.
″ Outspoken and respected journalist, Quentin Letts.

The special guest speaker, this year, is someone who is guaranteed to make a great impression. Alistair McGowan has, over the past few years, firmly established himself as one of the UK's top entertainers. He has earned numerous awards including Best Comedy Entertainment Award at the British Comedy Awards, Best Entertainment Programme and the Variety Club Comedy Award for his acclaimed series 'Alistair McGowan's Big Impression' and 'The Big Impression'.

This master of mimicry boasts a staggering repertoire, now exceeding 100 characters, and he provided many voices for the satirical TV programme 'Spitting Image'.

Alastair goes beyond simply doing send-ups of well known people. He succeeds in bringing each character's voice and mannerisms to life with such skill that you wonder if it is the real celebrity on stage and that Alistair McGowan has left the building.

As well as being a hugely respected entertainer and skilled awards host, Alistair is also a critically acclaimed actor, having won rave reviews in various plays and TV series' including BBC1's adaptation of Charles Dickens' 'Bleak House'. He even joined Dame Judy Dench for the Royal Shakespeare Company's musical version of 'The Merry Wives of Windsor'.

Sport has always been near to Alistair's performing heart. His re-voicing of video footage for 'The Staggering Stories of Ferdinand De Bargos' for BBC2, 'The Sports Review of the Year', 'Match of the Day' and 'Oddballs' has turned him into a sideline sporting celebrity.

Prepare to laugh at his wit, nod knowledgeably at his observations and possibly cringe when you realise he's actually lightly mocking you. This impressionist is the real McCoy and Rotary is thrilled he will be joining us at Conference.

Come and celebrate the Magic of Rotary at Bournemouth and register now. More information and registration advice can be found here.

The 'Magic of Rotary' Awards

title-bottom

Action: Club Rotarians

There are many Rotarians who work as groups or individuals on worthwhile projects that are not widely publicised. The "Ordinary Rotarians Doing Extraordinary Things" programme has featured at recent Rotary GB&I Conferences in Blackpool and Edinburgh.

For Rotary Year 2009/2010, we will be showcasing a similar programme, "The Magic of Rotary", and the awards will be presented at the Rotary GB&I 2010 Conference in Bournemouth. The aims of the award are to publicise the rich variety of projects across Rotary GB&I; to improve collaborative opportunities for clubs involved in similar projects; and to encourage more diversity in Rotary club programmes. Please click here to view the guidelines for the awards.

The deadline for receipt of applications is Friday 5th March.

Rotary's Got Artistic Talent

title-bottom

Action: Club Rotarians

It's not too late to display your talent and skills at the Rotary GB&I Conference in April by donating works for sale by silent auction in support of the Rotary Foundation.

This invitation is extended to artistic and crafty Rotarians, their family and friends (or even artists who may be known to you). It's not just open to pictorial artists, but to anyone who takes part in creative art and craftwork.

Respond to this invitation and we hope to see a grand exhibition of the artistic work of the wider family of Rotary at the Rotary GB&I Conference at Bournemouth between 16th and 18th April 2010, all of which will be sold by silent auction during the Conference, with the proceeds going to the Bill Huntley Endowment within the Permanent Fund of Rotary Foundation to provide a Huntley Peace Fellow every three years in perpetuity.

It doesn't matter what your skills are, all we need to know are your details, what item(s) you wish to donate and whether you require any expenses towards your work.

The Bill Huntley Endowment has been identified by Rotary GB&I President David and the 2009/10 General Council has agreed to it being one of their main Foundation Targets.
