We had a very successful junior chess tournament yesterday at St John’s School.
Firstly, I must thank David Bundock at St John’s, Dee & Mike Turton - our chess ‘experts’, Meron, Graeme and Christine who all helped make the success it was.
We had 20 under 11 (at time of event) children of varying ages and from a number of different schools, all with varying chess ability - from almost beginner to very good!
One effect of holding the tournament at St John’s is that they now have a chess club and 9 of the entrants were from St John’s - a very positive result.
We had 2 groups of 10 players in each, and each child played 4 matches. The final was a match between the group winners. Both group winners received a small trophy and the overall winner the Rotary Junior Chess Trophy to keep for the year (which will be engraved).
The winner was Filippos Ierodiakonou and the runner up Thomas Mueller.
The prizes were presented by Mike Turton.
Overall a very satisfying day that proves that attention to detail works
