The Walk Group started in 1999 with a couple of local walks for Rotarians and partners. The Chiltern Society, to commemorate the Millennium, designed and way-marked a 133 mile walking circuit around the Chilterns – the Chiltern Way.
The Group decided to walk the Way in stages of about 6 miles each month. This required cars to be positioned at the beginning and end of each leg of the walk. It took nearly 3 years to complete the circuit!
The current Walks are again of about 6 miles; take place on Sunday mornings; about every 7-8 weeks; usually in the beautiful Chilterns; usually somewhere local in the winter, a bit further afield in the summer.
The arrangements are: - a village hall is booked as a base; meet at 10.00 am; park; put out tables and chairs; maps are distributed; walk. On our return at about 1.30 pm we set out the bring-and-share food and drink we have all brought and have a very convivial lunch. Clear up and depart about 3.00 pm.
Joining details are sent out by email 3 weeks ahead of each walk date to those who have registered their interest. The date is also announced at a Rotary meeting so that all club members are aware and can join in. The walks have become popular with several friends of members who are now regular attenders.
Over the years we have hired the majority of village halls in the Chilterns – from Goring in the south to Barton-the-Clay in the north (could write a guide!). The facilities and hire charges vary considerably, but the cost to walkers is currently averaged at £2 pp to cover the cost of each hall.
The walks are good fun, not difficult, sociable, and with an excellent lunch. You are very welcome to join in.
