Rotary-Funded Newborn Care Project Delivers Hope to Ukraine's Most Vulnerable Babies
Hope for Ukraine's Newborns as Rotary Supports Major Neonatal Care Initiative. A significant humanitarian shipment is on its way to Ukraine, bringing practical support and comfort to some of the country's most vulnerable newborn babies and their families.
A significant humanitarian shipment is on its way to Ukraine, bringing practical support and comfort to some of the country's most vulnerable newborn babies and their families.
Thanks in part to a generous £1,000 donation from our Rotary Club, a wider £38,000 neonatal care project is now being delivered to hospitals across Ukraine. The initiative includes the packing and distribution of 700 hand-knitted baby hats and the purchase of 1,500 Kangaroo Mother Care wraps, which will be sent to neonatology units caring for premature and vulnerable infants.
Kangaroo Mother Care wraps enable close skin-to-skin contact between babies and their parents, an approach recognised worldwide for improving infant health and development. Each wrap will carry a Rotary label, highlighting Rotary's commitment to supporting communities in need. Many of the carriers have also been recycled, ensuring the project promotes sustainability as well as compassionate care.
The project has been coordinated by Dr John Philip, Surgeon, Past District Governor, member of The Rotary Foundation Cadre and the International Rotary Fellowship of Healthcare Professionals. Dr Philip expressed his gratitude for the Club's contribution, which has helped make this vital support possible.
The news comes at a challenging time for Ukraine. Reports indicate that attacks on civilian infrastructure continue, with a children's hospital in Kyiv reportedly sustaining damage during recent missile strikes. While details are still emerging, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing hardships faced by Ukrainian families.
Against this backdrop, the delivery of neonatal care equipment and baby essentials represents more than practical assistance; it is a message of solidarity, hope and friendship from Rotarians to families facing unimaginable circumstances.
