What a wonderful day we had for our fifth Annual Rotary Club of Newbury’s “Boules in the Square Tournament” on Sunday June 11th and an emphatic final it proved to be! This was fought out between last year’s winners A-Plan All Stars and Charles Lucas & Marshall and it was the latter team of Alun & Judith Lewis, Stuart Duncan and Hemant Amin who raced away to secure the win and lift the cup.
Over £2000 was raised which will be used to support Newbury Rotary’s nominated charities of End Polio Now, West Berks Young Carers, West Berkshire Mencap, Parkinson’s UK and others.
This year we had 16 teams from the local community throwing themselves into the spirit of the event. During the course of the day teams representing both local community groups and businesses from A-Plan All Stars, Bill’s Restaurant, Boundary Fencers, Charles Lucas & Marshall, Derry Mades, Inner Circle Catering, Mencap A & B, Newbury Office Supplies, Regent Lettings, Round Table, SPXFlow, The Chasers, The Watermill, The Woodentops & Wilkins Chimney Sweeps took part with some very exciting and closely fought competition .
With their winner’s cup, the Charles, Lucas and Marshall team also received a meal for 4 kindly donated by Strada and 4 bottles of beer. The runners up, A-Plan, received a Hamper from Bill’s Restaurant and 4 bottles of beer. The plate competition for losing semi finalists was between Mencap & Office Supplies with the latter winning 4 bottles of beer All of the beer was kindly donated by West Berks Brewery
This annual event, temporarily converts The Market Place into a French town centre with six boules pistes. One piste is reserved for the “Closest to the Jack” competition open to the general public. Kevin Tooze carried off the adult prize of a meal for two at The Elephant at the Square whilst Carlos Wood, for the second year running, claimed the Junior winners’s tin of French pastries.
Many thanks to our local sponsors; Barlows Woodyard, Bill’s Restaurant, Buildbase, Castle Electrical Services, Claritas Accountancy, Control Services Ltd, Charles Lucas & Marshall, Dickens Hopgood & Chidley, Elephant in the Market, K A M Property Maintenance Services, METRO Bank, Petanque Wallingford, Regent Lettings, Rivar Sand & Gravel, SPXFlow, Strada, Vokins Construction, West Berks Brewery & Wilkins Chimney Sweep and to Kennet Radio for their live commentary through the day.
