Child literacy is a keen focus of Newbury Rotary and is a particular interest of our immediate Past President Hemant Amin. During his presidency in 2014-15 Hemant worked with local schools to see if and how Rotary could encourage reading in our local Primary Schools.
Several projects emerged and we created some bookplates too to put in the books donated.
Rotarians were encouraged to train to assist and support reading skills in local West Berkshire Primary Schools through the organisation of a local charity, ABCtoRead .
In 2015 John Rankin School was undertaking a new initiative to create a wider awareness and understanding of the world by introducing the International Primary Curriculum supported by an international perspective with their school library.
Newbury Rotary was delighted to assist and provided funding to purchase the books.
Falkland School's Library and classroom reading corners had become rather tired and chaotic and were desperately in need of upgrading and re-stocking to encourage the children to love reading.
Newbury Rotary provided a grant to help them with their project to purchase new library boxes and seats and of course new books!. Like all good and worthwile projects nothing happens overnight, But what a difference the year between the Club's initial visit to view their facilities and our return visit in March 2016 has made. Just take a look at the before and after photos in the gallery above.
