A rich Christmas tradition
The Service of Nine Lessons and Carols was first devised in 1880 by the Bishop of Truro as an alternative to spending Christmas Eve in the pub. In 1918, Eric Milner-White, Dean of King’s College, Cambridge, adapted it into the form we know today, to bring comfort and hope in the aftermath of the First World War. Today, this service is performed throughout the world and remains a cherished part of Christmas.
Music for the occasion
We are delighted to welcome Rachel Riordan, Musical Director, who will lead the Cecilia Singers, providers of the choral music for this service over several years. Organist Stewart McSweeney will accompany the choir and support the service.
Making a difference at Christmas
By attending, you’ll be helping those facing hardship this Christmas. In recent years, your generosity has had real impact:
2022: £1,000 raised for the Rotary Club of Ukraine, providing urgent aid.
2023: £1,750 donated to Shelterbox, supporting communities affected by conflict and disaster.
2024: £2,500 given to The Cowshed, a Berkshire-based charity assisting local families in need.
This year, we continue our tradition of offering support where it’s most needed—combining beautiful music, historic surroundings, and practical help for those in difficulty.
