Planting purple crocus bulbs by the statue to Tom Morris to mark the work done by Rotary in eradicating polio from the world.

Local school children from Greyfriars and St Leonards joined members of the Rotary Club of St Andrews last week to plant purple crocuses on World Polio Day. Rotary worldwide launched its polio eradication programme 'polio plus',  in 1985 and was joined in 1988 with WHO, UNICEF & the Gates Foundations. At this time there were 350,000 cases of polio every year but thanks to Global Polio Eradication Initiative the incidence of Polio has plummeted by more than 99.8%. Rotary International has contributed over £1.6 billion to the cause and, importantly, British Rotarians have contributed £33.2 million. Polio vaccine has been given to 3 billion children in 122 countries. Rotary remains resolute in delivering on the promise of a POLIO FREE WORLD.
