This week’s talk was given by the Club’s former President, Jean-Marc Murré. The subject was ‘Disneyland Paris: an Overview’ and there was no better person to address the Club on this subject given Jean-Marc’s pivotal role in the development of Disneyland Paris since its inception. Contracts for the project were signed in March 1987 following which a development on an extraordinary scale quickly took place -5500 acres on which were built two themed parks, seven themed hotels (5700 rooms), a Disneyland village and golf course. The economic impact on the surrounding area was profound such that the government felt it made sense to install a high speed metro train service which further developed the area and its economic growth. Disney’s investment in the project has been about 8 billion euros with additional state funding of 70 million euros. As a result Disney is now France’s largest employer with 63000 employees. It welcomes 375 million visitors annually and Disney’s tourism now accounts for approximately 6% of France’s tourism turnover. Jean-Marc outlined his role in the organisation……..primarily selling Disneyland Paris to a world market with particular attention to those high-yielding countries including the USA and Japan. His training began with an intensive eight week course in the Orlando Disney Park where he briefly worked at each and every job in order to gain a complete understanding of how the operation worked. He then began a globe trotting career lasting twenty-four years successfully selling Disneyland Paris to the world; his efforts and achievements were recognised with the award of the French Medal for Tourism. This talk was warmly received by the members, suitably expressed in Rosalind Barton’s vote of thanks.
