At a Rotaract meeting with 8 international students, Jack had been in all 8 different countries.
Member of the Club Jack Daniels is always a popular speaker. His ‘Memories’ were entertaining. Having been brought up on a small rural farm, early in life he looked for ways to travel the world, and he found work which often enabled him to do so. His adventures, ranging from the terrifying to the extremely pleasurable and everything on between, found him friends wherever he went. Special contacts included Armenians, Huguenots and Rotarians all over the globe. He always travelled alone with the minimum of possessions (a Buddhist monk once told him ‘You’ll never leave your trousers behind, so keep everything there’). Jack spoke of the nights he spent in police jails in various countries because of visa infringements. On one occasion while attempting to travel in Turkmenistan he was left alone in a hut on the border with Iran and was helped by the guard and his impoverished mother who allowed him to stay for 3 days (and gained him the experience and skill of milking her goat!). On another occasion while sleeping on an overnight train in India, Jack woke to find his dentures had been removed in his sleep and were being tried on by all the passengers in the carriage -'don’t worry', they told him, ‘we’ll wash them for you afterwards’! In the USA Jack found himself locked in the Botanic Gardens, Newport Rhode Island, after closing time; in a precarious entanglement with the barbed wire at the top of the high gates, Jack found himself accosted by security guards and, on being asked his name the fire brigade were immediately called to get him down and ‘bring him in’ for questioning….. Jack’s talk gave the impression of many more adventures still to be told….. Rob Dougan gave the vote of thanks.
