Bute Medical Society

Wed, Mar 12th 2025 at 12:40 pm - 2:00 pm

2 Student members of the charity branch of the Society gave an enlightening presentation.

Guest speakers were Alathea Stevenson and Lina Fedlu. Both are medical students and members of The Bute Medical Society, one of the oldest and largest societies in St Andrews University. Founded in 1915 the society currently has over 500 members. Alathea is secretary of the society and Lena is the editor of the commemorative pamphlet The Lancelet which has been produced for the 110th anniversary. Medical students can take part in various activities run by the society as a means of relieving stress, meeting fellow students, having fun together. Activities are many, ranging from sport (football, rugby, netball, hockey, badminton); social activities (an annual ball, hecklings for freshers, nights out, a bonfire to start each session). The Bute Innovation Forum organises talks and lectures on ‘how to survive medicine’, and brings recently qualified doctors to give the students awareness of what to expect. The charity branch of the society supports Frontline Fife, a local charity offering housing support and advice how to avoid homelessness, and The Andrew Clark Trust which sponsors children in Myanmar, giving them access to health-care and education. Fund-raising is also fun and includes bake-sales and pie-in-the-face events! Alathea and Lina explained that being a medical student is a serious business and very hard work, so all opportunities to socialise with fellow students and relax together are very important. This was an interesting insight int the lives of medical students. Rob Dougan gave the vote of thanks.
