Holly Fraser gave a presentation and receive a cheque for £6000 raised at our International Rotary Golf Tournament

The meeting began with the Club handing over a cheque for £6000 to Cancer Research UK which was received on behalf of the charity with grateful thanks by Holly Fraser, one of CRUK’s local fundraisers. Holly was then invited to outline the work of the charity and in particular how monies raised were spent. She did this with great gusto and enthusiasm and it was clear from this just how committed she is to all that CRUK do. The charity’s mission is ‘to beat cancer’ and in this they are making huge strides. Fifty years ago only one in four people survived a cancer diagnosis: today that figure is two in four, and the hope is that by 2035 it will be three in four. Probably the world’s biggest cancer charity, CRUK has played a significant role in bringing about these remarkable improvements in survival prospects. Holly explained that 80p out of every £1 raised goes directly into scientific research and that eight out of ten people who get a cancer drug in the UK will be being treated with a drug researched and developed by CRUK scientists. Researchers  have to go through a competitive process when seeking funding so as to be absolutely sure that the money is being wisely spent on projects that are clearly worthwhile. The scale of fundraising is huge with a gross income in 2023/24 of £684m of which £403m was raised from donations, legacies and fundraising events, with the remainder primarily from trading through the charity’s shops and other outlets. Holly highlighted various successful fundraising events recently held in Scotland such as ‘Shine Local Biggar’ and ‘Business beats Cancer In Edinburgh’. The charity, she assured the meeting, was fully committed to Scotland as was evident by its commitment to the Cancer Research UK Scotland Institute in Glasgow. Holly’s talk was warmly received by the Club.’ John Peacock gave the vote of thanks
