Guest speaker was Jim Douglas of the Kilrymont Rotary Club on the subject of ’South Atlantic Crossing’. Jim gave members a fascinating introduction to the development of the weekly airmail services between Europe and South America in the 1930s when the French Aeropostale
organisation pioneered the service between France and Buenos Aires. He
explained that the first transatlantic flight was indeed a great coup
for the French. The skill of the pilots involved in the venture was
significant given the nature of the initial single-engined
open-cockpit aircraft used on the route. However this South Atlantic
Crossing was not without casualties, some twenty pilots losing their
lives over a three year period. Jim Macgregor proposed the vote of
thanks to the speaker.
