School pupils who were sponsored to attend the RYLA camps gave a report presentation.

Guest speakers were Emily Moore from Madras College and Kira Kovdia from St Leonard’s. Both were chosen for sponsorship by the club to attend the week long challenge at Camp RYLA (Rotary Young Leadership Award) 2024; both said they had thoroughly enjoyed and benefitted from the opportunities offered to them at the camp. They explained how the young people were organised into teams for different activities and challenges, including hill walking, rock climbing, cliff jumping, raft building. A team leader was elected for each activity. Individuals were pushed out of their comfort zones, their ability to adapt in unfamiliar circumstances with unfamiliar people tested. They learnt leadership skills, communication, understanding people’s strengths and weaknesses, overcoming fear with bravery and discipline, and explained how they gained confidence and skills to take through life, plus found new friends and unforgettable memories. Would they go again if given the opportunity? Both Emily and Kira gave a resounding ‘Yes!’. Ros Riungu from RYLA District 1010 gave a short talk about the Club’s support for the scheme over the years, and the vote of thanks was given by Gordon Wowk.
