3 Rotaract student interns reported on their 3 week teaching at the School

Selected by Rotaract President 2023-2024, Patricio, these 3 students experienced teaching children with learning difficulties.

Fellow Rotarian Wilber who often attends our Rotary lunches is involved closely with the School.

Guest speakers were Alex, Emma and Millie, three Rotaract students selected to teach at Kings Norton School in Uganda for three weeks over the summer and sponsored by the Club. In their presentation, called ‘A message of thanks’, the students reported their ‘life-changing’ experiences to the Club. They formed friendships with the children and with the adults. Among those adults was founder of the school, Madame Sylvia (wife of Wilbur Sabiti who is a regular visitor to Rotary in St Andrews) whose energy, commitment and kindness -hosting the three young teachers, taking them on a boat tour and on safari- made a huge impression. It was the children, their enthusiasm, capacity for hard work and joy, sense of fun, that made lasting memories. The children are given uniforms, transport (starting from 5am and returning around 8pm), excellent food, care, education and fun! and they respond in kind. The school is a community hub, a focal point for the area, offering equal opportunities where youngsters learn from each other in a safe and happy environment. Alex, Emma and Millie worked on a dance routine for assembly with the children -hard work but hugely enjoyed- and taught both mainstream and special needs children. Other special memories included a ride on a Boda boda (a motorbike taxi carrying up to four people), and being seen as the ’weakest link’ so given special attention by the children! Emma, Millie and Alex agreed it was hard to summarise their experience but that it was definitely life-changing and unforgettable.
