The meeting took an unusual turn this week: instead of a speaker members enjoyed ‘An Apres-Lunch Piano Serenade‘ played by Ian Hamilton, retired Minister and member of the Club. Introduced in amusing style by Gordon Wowk who was standing in for the President, Ian gave the Club a startling demonstration of his skills on the keyboard. His technical ability was matched by the skill with which he had made arrangements of many of the pieces. These arrangements of well known songs brought back many happy memories to members, many of whom were familiar with them. Ranging from a San Francisco/ New York, New York medley to a stunning selection from Mary Poppins, Ian covered many of the most famous contemporary songs and musicals. He also tested members musical knowledge with Love Story by Francis Lai arranged supposedly by WAMozart!- members were asked to identify the Mozartian inclusions which were cleverly inserted. ‘Naval Nocturne’ also tested the members’ knowledge of songs associated with the sea. There were twenty-one different songs incorporated into this medley, all with some close connection to the sea, the navy, ships and boats- a testing challenge enjoyed by all. The muted singing of members from time to time was definitely inferior to the skilful piano playing of our pianist. Ian wound up the afternoon with his arrangement of love songs from Andrew Lloyd Webber. The whole performance was hugely enjoyed by members and Gordon Wowk thanked Ian warmly for giving everyone so much pleasure.
