Guest speaker was Dr John Kerr on the subject of 'Volunteer Transport When You Need Help’. Dr Kerr outlined the transport and befriending services offered by Continuing Care NE Fife, a charitable organisation established in 1983, providing volunteers to drive those unable to utilise public or personal transport to appointments for healthcare, and supporting the Scottish Ambulance Services with non-emergency transport, enabling the Ambulance services to concentrate on emergencies. The Charity is looking to supplement its pool of drivers and befrienders as a matter of urgency. Clients are asked to make a donation to the organisation based on the distances driven by the volunteer drivers. The organisation employs a locally-based co-ordinator who endeavours to find suitable drivers who live in the vicinity of their clients. Journeys can be local or may involve hospital facilities in Kirkcaldy, Dunfermline or Stracathro, and in each case a door-to-door service is provided. The organisation has a hardship fund to assist clients unable to provide donations for the services provided; however, due to funding restrictions from government bodies, to enable it to provide its essential services the Charity is dependant upon donations from external organisations and from the public. Further information can be found on the Charity website at continuingcareNEfife.org.uk or by contacting the co-ordinator at : 0746 888 7900. The vote of thanks was given by Ann Baird who has used the services of the charity herself, highly recommending their work.
