This week's meeting was attended by a number of guests and commenced with the introduction by Ian Hamilton of a new member, Virginia Fowler, who was inducted into the club by President Frank Quinault. The speaker was Dr Wendy Simpson who works for NHS Fife in the important role of looking after staff wellbeing. Dr Simpson, who studied psychology at both St Andrews and Edinburgh, highlighted how 47% of NHS staff felt unwell due to the stress of pressures of work, resulting in high levels of absenteeism amongst the staff. The role fulfilled by Dr Simpson and her colleagues is thus an essential one, and she introduced those present at the meeting to seven wellbeing skills used in her daily work, including engaging the active participation of the members and guests present in a simple qigong exercise as a first step to improving ones wellbeing. This was an excellent presentation, much appreciated by all present. Questions from members were expertly dealt with by Dr Simpson prior to the vote of thanks which was given by past president Hamish Tait.
