The speaker was member of the club Tommy Brown, giving his inaugural talk to the club, about
his life and career. He called his talk ‘My career so far! From Doctor
of Medicine to Company Doctor….’ describing his wish to become a medical
doctor but then finding himself working for the better health of
companies rather than bodies! While a student at Edinburgh University, Tommy spent two summer vacations working for Christian Salvesen
on Granton Docks; on graduation he became a Graduate Trainee with the
firm. Thereafter he spent 20 years working in Logistics and Supply
Chains - what he termed ‘sheds and lorries’. He described some of his
experiences during this time - unloading a fish lorry covered in
seagulls, negotiating during the 1970s strikes with a shop steward brandishing a hot poker, living in Spain while setting up a company, and much besides. In 2001 Tommy began the second phase in his working life, this time setting up his own executive business management.
His role was to enter a company anywhere in the world for perhaps 6
months, look at general management problems and find potential solutions
to them. Over 20 years he has helped more than 26 companies in this
way. In 2014 Tommy returned home to Scotland and used his business experience to help charities, including The Teapot Trust (art therapy for mental health patients) and Bike for Good (promoting physical and mental well-being through cycling). Currently Tommy is working with the Loch Insh Outdoor Centre. He is also 500 kilometres through walking the Camino de Santiago, which could be the subject for his next talk. Questions from members followed and John Peacock gave the vote of thanks.
