Agroecology in Action was the subject of a talk given to club members by Connie Hunter who runs the East Neuk Market Garden near St Monans in Fife. Connie outlined how she and her husband spent time in Europe working on Community Supported agriculture projects on organic farms, and how this led them to an interest in sustainable farming. On return to Fife they trained at Pillars of Hercules at the foot of the Lomond Hills before identifying a suitable location where, with limited experience, they could lease a small plot of land and start their own market garden. Now in their fourth year of operation, they have experimented with differing growing regimes by the interplanting of beds to enable two or three crops from the same bed in the same season. Working entirely by hand with no mechanical assistance and growing everything from seed, Connie explained how the essentials are weed management and the preparation of compost from their operation to replenish and maintain a healthy soil. This, in turn, means they can provide healthy food to promote health in the people who eat it. The vote of thanks was given by Rotarian Alex Clark on behalf of members.
