A
group of members enjoyed a visit to The Byre Theatre where they were
able to view the entire building while no shows were operating. The
guides were Karl Morgan, Front of House Co-ordinator, and David
Venters, Head of Technical and Operations, who were constantly asked
challenging questions about the theatre and its productions. The visit
started in the auditorium with members observing the complicated
lighting and sound-system board, then continuing on to the stage and
dock areas where it was explained how scenery comes into and out of the
behind-the-scenes area. Next
was a look at the wardrobe and dressing rooms area via the offices,
then on to the large technical area on level three of the theatre. The
more adventurous members in the group took the walk high above the stage
amidst complicated lighting and some even walked up to the high narrow
spiral steps seen from the Abbey Street entrance. A small model of the
first Byre Theatre was viewed with stories of how the cast of productions had to come up and down an outside ladder, obtained from the
shipbuilding yards, in order to reach the stage. This present, the
third, version of the theatre and its architecture was discussed and
felt to be excellently viewed by all the incoming theatre companies.
President Frank Quinault gave a warm vote of thanks to the two guides
following an excellent trip round the theatre observing areas not
generally on view to the theatregoers.
