Stephen
Stewart, Director of the University Sports Centre, gave members an
illustrated talk on Saints Sport and then gave them a tour of the
centre. He described the huge number of activities that take place in
the sports centre and in the surrounding outdoor courts and pitches. He explained that St Andrews took first place the UK universities league
table, not least by virtue of its strong performance in student
satisfaction, where sport played a strong role. Saints Sport provides
opportunities for all students. Whether looking to reach the pinnacle of
a sporting career, staying fit and healthy while studying, having fun
playing a favourite sport or trying a new sport for the very first
time, Saints Sport provides opportunities for every student to make the
most of their experience while studying at St Andrews. Students are also
given training for volunteering in local schools and clubs and further
afield, for example in projects in Zambia. He explained that the centre
is not just for students and university staff, but is open to members of
the local community of all ages from the Junior Saints for primary
school children, secondary sport for older children, adult and senior
sport sections. Also on offer are health and fitness classes, personal
training, physiotherapy, and wellbeing, with expert help and tuition for
all levels of ability. Frank Quinault thanked Stephen for his talk and
tour which were much appreciated by members present.
