President Hamish Tait welcomed members to the virtual meeting via Zoom when the speaker was Margaret MacNaughton, a member of the R&A. Margaret, from Aberdeen, is a former chair of Scottish Ladies Golf and past Captain of Aberdeen Ladies Golf Club. When she received the letter inviting her to join the R&A, five years ago, she was surprised but delighted and tremendously honoured. At no time has she ever felt other than welcome in the club. Her husband is also a member and they have attended many social and golfing events.
Margaret is currently a member of the Project Committee working on the alterations to the clubhouse, which will provide changing rooms for women. The result, which will not be complete until after the Open in 2022, will be both practical and functional.
Margaret took us back to when she was a child and spent her holidays in St Andrews, staying with her family at the Scores Hotel every year and swimming in the Step Rock Pool. She became a student at Dunfermline College, where hockey was her main sport, playing for Scotland and in the international team for four years. Turning to golf, Margaret told us of the many events in which she has been involved, recalling her nerves when teeing off on the Old Course in a big match!
Concluding her talk, she said how enjoyable golf had been for her, making many friends. She hopes that her home club, Aberdeen Ladies, may take a lesson from the R&A by joining together with the male club of Royal Aberdeen.
Appropriately, Rotary golfer David Scott thanked Margaret for her interesting talk and wished her well for the future.
