Many Club members joined the weekly Zoom meeting to hear fellow Rotarian, Joe Headon, report on the progress of the St Andrews West development. The Masterplan, approved in 2018, was more than ten years in the making. It features 900 homes, of which 30% are to be ‘affordable’; two care homes; a mixed-use civic centre; and a ring road. St Andrews West will now have a school at its heart, with the new Madras College due to open there in August of this year. The Masterplan is still evolving, in response to climate change and to the pandemic. Its answer to the question – How will we be living in future? – is the 20 Minute Neighbourhood. A diverse community for all ages, with a business hub to facilitate homeworking, a reduced role for cars, retail outlets designed to be owned and supplied by local people, lots of open space and many ecological features. There is even to be a rope bridge to enable squirrels to cross the approach road in safety! Besides aerial views of the site under development were artists’ impressions, showing the architecture to be unquestionably modern but mindful of tradition. Joe hopes that St Andrews West will be seen as Scotland’s ‘Go to’ development. Work on the first houses and the two care homes is due to begin next Spring, with people in residence from 2023, followed by gradual growth of some 40 to 50 units a year. Henry Paul gave the vote of thanks, noting how well Club members would be served - with a choice of care homes!
