St Andrews Rotary Club’s newest recruit introduced himself to other members with an entertaining autobiographical account on Zoom. Martin Passmore was born in Bath, educated in Kent and at St Andrews University, and returned to Somerset as a History Teacher for many years before coming to live in St Andrews. Three characteristics were evident. Martin is someone who prepares meticulously and is thus able to pursue many different activities at the same time but is also open to new challenges. Careful preparation was already apparent when, as the first in his family to attend university, he sent for no fewer than 26 prospectuses before choosing St Andrews. Never having been to Scotland before that was a bold choice. He made the most of it, becoming Senior Student at St Salvator’s Hall, a founding member of the Gilbert and Sullivan Society and President of the Kate Kennedy Club in its 50th anniversary year. After almost 15 years as a History Teacher, Martin felt the need for a change. It certainly was that because he found himself without a job when the Gateway Building, which had recruited him as its Education Officer, went into administration before it even opened. Nothing daunted, Martin opened the gift shop ‘Loot’ in Market Street before his long-standing interest in matters military (including an extensive collection of uniforms, begun as a schoolboy) brought him not one but two job offers, with the Army Cadet Force and with CVQO, the education charity that provides vocational qualifications for young people. Having just reduced these commitments to two days a week, Martin will be filling the remainder through his chairmanship of the St Leonards School Council and service to several other charities - as well as by writing a whodunnit and a new musical! Katharine Thain, in her vote of thanks, said it was clear that Rotary would benefit enormously from its new recruit, Martin Passmore.
