Madras Pupils explain opportunities within the school

The Club enjoyed a well-presented and illustrated talk, Madras College: Our Journey, given by the Head Girl, Amani Mohammed, and her schoolfriend, Alayna Martin. The unifying theme of the talk was just how many and varied are the opportunities now open to pupils and how they are encouraged to take advantage of them by their teachers. Madras supports five international exchange programmes - with France, Germany, Japan, Spain and the USA – which are always memorable and often give rise to lasting friendships. Neither speaker had participated in these particular exchanges but both will be going to Sri Lanka to work as volunteers in a school for young children with disabilities, having raised much of the funding themselves. Closer to home, the University has been a helpful partner to Madras, for instance through employability training. The girls also recalled the amazing achievement of fellow-pupil Brynja Duthie, whose campaign for research into Motor Neurone Disease has raised some £40,000. Academic success in gaining places at university has been matched by recent sporting success, especially in Athletics. Social events during the past year had included an excellent Burns Supper and a splendid Leavers’ Ball. Amani and Alayna thanked the Rotary Club for the many opportunities that it provides, such as the Youth Leadership Awards and Euroscola. Amani, who plans to study Dentistry, was presented with a Certificate, as Head Girl, and Alayna, who plans to study Medicine, was asked to convey one for the Head Boy, who was unable to be present. In her vote of thanks Bette Hunter welcomed the fact that so many more opportunities are available now than was the case when she was at school.
