Citizen of the Year Doug Stephen updated us on Craigtoun Park
After welcoming members and guests Colin Brown spoke of the Children’s Fun Day this week, funded by both St Andrews Rotary Clubs, when 55 children and their families will meet at Craigtoun Park for sport, entertainment and fun. The Club award to the non-Rotarian Citizen of the Year goes deservedly to Doug Stephen who has worked tirelessly to transform Craigtoun Park over many years. Henry Paul introduced Doug saying how far the Friends of Craigtoun have come on their project to revitalise the Park, illustrating that volunteer power really can work, and how Doug has been there right from the start. Doug outlined the tenets of The Friends: sustainability, quality, affordability, inclusivity. Current events include the Heritage Walks, the Armed Forces Veterans Breakfast Club, Winter wellness sessions, the Fairy Glen trail for children, 90-day catering courses for young trainees. Volunteers provide around 9,000 hours on projects designed to bring people to the park, and Doug thanked his team for their commitment. The Friends are good collaborators working not just with Fife Council but in collaboration with many community groups including the Men’s Shed, St Andrews University, HMP Castle Huntly, Madras, the Sunshine kitchen, Families First. The exciting work of restoring the Dutch Village has made really positive progress and plans continue…. Henry Paul put out a plea for photos from the past, especially any video footage of dances held there. James Murray gave the vote of thanks, congratulating Doug and his team on their work and sending best wishes for the future.
