Why get involved? Cooking amongst young people is a growing interest and a valuable life skill. Schools seem to agree and the Rotary GB&I Young Chef competition, in association with leading olive oil company Filippo Berio, goes from strength to strength each year producing some superb quality cooking from young people.
Thousands of youngsters from all over Great Britain and Ireland entered the 2013 competition and were shortlisted down to eight after competing in local and regional competitions. The contestants prepared and presented their three course meals for judging by an expert panel which included Christopher Baston, National Chairman of the Craft Guild of Chefs, David Kelman, Executive Chef at the Ellenborough Park Hotel, Stuart McLeod, Director of Zuidam UK Ltd, and Isabelle Chavez, winner of the 2012 competition.
This year, 14 year old Jordon Powell, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Horsham won the competition and is looking forward to a trip to Tuscany, courtesy of generous sponsors Filippo Berio. Jordon also received a cash prize and will be treated to a cookery experience at a top hotel. His three course menu excited the judges with a rich blend of flavours and excellent use of ingredients.
