Speaker - Ben Shand, Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar 2006/07.
Ben is a past Rotary Scholar hosted by Cambridge South and remembers tha Club with great affection. He will reflect on his time in Cambridge, memories from completing the Mongolian Rally with thanks to the 1080 clubs who sponsored his participation. Also his subsequent career as a consultant in US health-care which is directly linked to his MSc in Cambridge.
Towards the end of his stay in Cambridge Ben Shand took part, with 3 others, in the annual Mongol Rally to make money for the Mongol Charity. This involved buying an old banger of no more than 1 Litre engine size, and for less than £1500, and driving the 10,000 miles across Europe, from London to Mongolia. The old car was to be left there and the occupants to make their way back by other means. Lots of cars set off likewise from various parts of Europe, to rendezvous in Mongolia.
As you can imagine this was an exciting journey! Not least because 4 men, plus all their belongings for over a month, had to fit into this very small car for the epic journey!
Should be an interesting meeting.
