Tonight we hear from a well known local musician who has a wide experience of Conducting, Performing, Singing, Teaching and loves to share his enthusiasm for his subject with all ages and abilities.
As a past Head of Music at Anglia Ruskin University and Head of the County Peripatetic Music Service for Schools, current Musical Director for Choir 2000 and the Britton Sinfonia he is convinced music is a vital part of the school curriculum and of the wide benefit of taking part in musical events.
The current trend in the education system, with its tight budgets, is to minimise the arts and Peter is convinced this is a false economy. He recognises the need to use the budget to benefit every student not just the talented or well off. He knows that communal music making is such an inclusive and fun way of learning a wide variety of life skills such as a sense of community, a willingness to co-operate (rather than compete), a strong focus, a sense of rhythm and a ear for cues, sounds and emphasis - so important in language and communication.
To illustrate his meaning he talked us through a short video of his son, who is a peripatetic music teacher in Scotland, and who lights up schools with Streetband Workshops. The effect on the children is self evident. The confidence and sense of achievement that radiates from all the pupils is a joy to see.
