PILOT Thu 13th June 2019 went really well
'I thought I would just let you know about the excellent morning I have just had. Today I attended a pilot sports event in Cambridge held for children with a variety of disabilities. The event was run by the County Sports Partnership & the Schools Sports Partnership and was held at the University’s Outdoor Sports Complex at Wilberforce Road, Cambridge - in collaboration with Wheelpower and the Cambridge-South Rotary Club.

Despite the cloudy weather 150 children took part and thoroughly enjoyed all the athletic events that were available for them to try.  Twenty 14 to16 year old young people were also there from local schools acting as volunteer young leaders, an excellent way for them to gain leadership experience.

Wheelpower were there running some activities. I helped them and it was one of the most rewarding things I have ever done in Rotary.

THE DATE IN NOVEMBER 2019 HAS NOW BEEN CONFIRMED -  I for one cannot wait.' - Rtn  David Ellis.

ON THE DAY - Tue 12th November 2019

Cambridge South Rotary Club plan to make this an annual project, working closely with Wheelpower and other local Sports Organisations - The first such event in the Cambridge City area this November has been a great success.

It was a great opportunity to network with other youngsters and adults alike.

Always wanted to try - Archery, Bocca, Tabletennis, Hockey, Boxing, Shooting ??

On the day teachers, carers and students converged on the Sports Centre for a 6hour day of exciting and fully inclusive sports for young people with a wide variety of disabilities.  5 types were on offer - 45min sessions was interspersed with refreshments and change over of equipment.  The Wheelpower Team arrived in vans full of sports wheelchairs, sports equipment and with experienced and supportive coaches.  Briefed volunteers were on hand to ensure the day went smoothly. Carefully chosen packed lunches were on offer

They arrived in good time to get  colour coded badge and meet their team escorts.

The Wheelpower organisation will also maintain contact afterwards to help and encourage further involvement in a student's chosen sport(s).
