May 2018 Homeless 5-a-Side Football Tournament

Congratulations TO ALL !

TEN enthusiastic teams and their organisations came to battle, on a gloriously sunny day, for the medals and the Tommy McLafferty Cup plus Goalie and Player of the Tournament Cups.

The Abbey Sports Centre All Weather Astro-turf area, behind the pool, Whitehall Road off the Newmarket Road, Cambridge - a great site - our thanks go to the City Council for donating their space for the day.  

NOTE - First Aiders are always on site plus the Pool attendants (with charged mobile phones ready to call an ambulance).  Toilets are in the pool building nearby.  Showers available.

Rotary banners and signs showed the way in and we had friends and supporters who came to cheer on the teams. 

Our 4 Referees were  Batch Fitness' Iain and Clive, Dan Coe (Norwich City FC) and Musa Kamara who kindly donating their time.    

Helpers arrived 9am

11am - Team / Player Registration started and kit claimed.

11am-12pm - The Referees get everyone well warmed up 

Refreshments available for players & helpers throughout.

Play started at 1pm - we cheered on 70 plucky players !

5pm - Cups and Medals were awarded and photos taken.

Then a Barritos Meal was served - Nanna Mexico.

Background to Event.   
When Tommy McLafferty died homeless on the streets of Cambridge in 2009, friends who had met him there decided that the event (a 5-a-side football tournament) should carry his name because of his love of the game and the time he spent as a successful coach with the Scottish giants Celtic. 
Amazingly, the Player of our 2010 Tournament Musa Kamara went on to Captain the England team at the Homeless World Cup in Rio de Janeiro. Today he returned with his wife as a trained coach to Referee and present the medals.
Rotarians heard about the Homeless World Cup at a Rotary conference and decided to arrange a local tournament in Cambridge.
