Tonight we started 2018 with an interesting historical talk on the well established local business in Histon -
'The Contribution of Chivers & Sons to the local economy.
given by enthusiastic Village Historian for Histon & Impington - Eleanor Whitehead.
Having started out as cereal farmers generations of the Chivers family have responded to market pressures and social changes to keep their concern vibrant and relevant. They moved into fruit growing and preserving , canning and jellies etc providing much needed stable jobs for the wider area from Victorian times and through both World Wars. At their peak they would bus workers in from as far away as Soham and had their own railway siding in Histon to get their produce to the London markets efficiently. They were consistently good at innovation eg moving from wooden crates to USA-type corrigated cardboard boxes and even made their own 150 seater super buses. Competition has now shrunk the enterprise but family members still operate locally on their cereal farm.
