Sir Graham Bright is our current Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Police & Crime Commissioner and spoke about the role and how he makes it work.

This regular Monday meeting was highlighted because it was held in Westminster College as a 'taster' in the Club's quest for a suitable venue for our regular meetings.

The speaker was Sir Graham Bright, the current Police and Crime Commissioner for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, an elected county post under Statutory Legislation. He gave an outline of the components of his role that he, as the 1st incumbent, has initiated over the three years since his election in 2012
Sir Graham emphasised the independence of the role, his policy of operating as a committee of one, and the authority that is carried by the post in relation to the County Constabulary. He outlined fourteen areas of concern that he has addressed, all of which, it is fair to say from his talk, sounded basic common sense.
He described the ways he developed and maintained good contacts between the police and the community; using manned booths in supermarkets, establishment of a concordat with the Local Authority agencies in the region, and his "Young People" initiative specifically by targeting  funding for youth.
To challenge our complacency, he also drew our attention to some specific problems in the environs of Cambridge. He mentioned his concerns about child and family abuse, human trafficking, vulnerable groups such as those affected by mental health issues, the 'revolving" prison door, and the growing menace of cyber-crime. He did give some suggested solutions to these problems that he was actively pursuing in conjunction with the many agencies involved.
Also during his talk he touched on the need to recognise that running the Office of Police and Crime Commissioner must be as a business and that one of his first tasks was to establish a business plan for the Office. He suggested that the proof of the pudding  was that Cambridge had not lost any front-line police officers despite the very rigorous financial constraints that had affected each and every police force in the country. It was evident from his talk that many counties had sustained very serious  losses of front-line officers.
It was clear from the questions that what our speaker had to say was received with interest -      JW.
