Happy 3rd Birthday to Us !!
Look out for us in the Cambridge Evening News next week!
What fun!
Open 10.00am - 12.00pm on the first Friday morning of each month.
Today we celebrated three years of monthly cafes. We are delighted that government ministers Andrew Landsley and David Willet, with MEP Vicky Ford and Douglas DeLacey - our Parish Council Chairman, were able to join us to make the day a very special event. We were also very pleased to have a visit from two members of the St Neots Club, who's own cafe has gone from strength to strength.
We were made a very special cake by Eileen Webster and everyone sang a rousing version of Happy Birthday to mark the occassion. We sang songs from our themes across the past year including Que Sera Sera, A Nightingale sang in Berkeley Square and How much is that Doggie in the Window. Sam entertained us with a lively and humerous talk about how farms worked in the fens before the big machinery was around. He brought real withy baskets for harvesting potatoes, a flat tined fork for the digging and a massive straw cutting knife to show us. The rotary team decorated the room with balloons and streamers and were delighted to see a packed room full of singers in good voice.
A large party from Abbeyfield, Histon came along and took the opportunity to celebrate some of their own successes. Sally (their new manager) was very proud to present flowers to Fatima, who had recently made it to the National Final of Dementia Care Worker of the Year, while George was presented with the results of 18months of his creative work making the most enormous wool pompom !! Pat, who is sadly leaving her role in the home, was stunned to receive her own bouquet and an enthusiastic clap!
What a memorable way to mark this special day!
A Memory-Cafe is where there is a warm welcome for people with dementia or other problems associated memory loss (and their families / carers), who's new memories may be partial and confusing. The aim is to evoke old memories that are complete and comfortable through, for example, refreshments in china cups, home made cakes, photos and documents from past years, songs and poems and informal talks.
Next month doors open on 4th April 2014 - our theme is Springtime.
