Armistice Day and celebrations with Fireworks.
This month we had some lovely singing over a nice cup of tea with scrumptious cakes. Basil, Wendy, Ann, Alan, Liz and John led us in such gems as The Quartermasters stores, We'll meet again and Well you know what sailors are !
Several people brought along some wartime souvenirs and Joseph Cassells shared with us a lovely story about his father. Edward Cassells was in the First World War in the Royal Army Medical Corps and was at the front several times and having been gassed three times he spent years in and out of hospital. In the end he died at just 39 years old and when Joseph was only 7 years old. Joe was always sad that he didn't have any photos of his father until a chance meeting by his daughter led to a cousin in Ireland who recently sent over this treasured photo of Edward in his early twenties smart in his uniform !
We also had a very interesting guest speaker today. Rene Hansen from the Disabled Living Foundation came to tell us about a new lending library of simple, but very useful, living aids for people with sight or hearing or memory loss. For a small refundable deposit (and the cost of return post) you can borrow equipment for 2 weeks at a time, so that you can test whether or not it is worth investing in them full time. This charity gives impartial information and advice that can help us maintain an independent life style. They produce a comprehensive catalogue of what is on offer and left some with us to browse. He demonstrated several examples of the things they offer such as
- a day/ night clock
- a speaking clock
- a portable front door bell
- a motion detector that reminds you to 'take your keys' when you leave the house
and many more.
