This month we were at our new venue for the first time! Worries that folk might find it hard to find us evapourated as our regulars and several new customers streamed through the doors. It was a bright sunny day, if with a chilly wind, but it didn't seem to deter anyone. Our theme was Easter and spring flowers and all the bright colours that image conjours up. We sang lots of uplifting songs including Oh what a beautiful morning, Over the Rainbow, Congratulations, April showers and April Lady. Then Wendy read the lyrical poem by Wordsworth - Golden Daffodils, which several people knew by heart from their school days.
Rtn Alan Shipp came to talk about his enthusiasm for the National Hyacinth Collection at his farm in Waterbeach and his work as one of the few commercial bulb growers in Britain. He showed us a wonderful kaleidoscope of colourful flowers in many shapes and sizes, depending on their variety. These ranged some very simple ancient forms from biblical times right through to modern densely flowering singles and doubles eg. the Double Pink Roman hyacinth in the photo with a blue background was rescued from a garden in Bulgaria, after it was thought extinct.
His interest in his subject was plain and made listening to him a delight.
As usual our volunteers produced a tasty range of cakes and biscuits for us all to share and John and Liz organised the singing and piano accompaniment.
Open 10.00am - 12.00pm on the first Friday morning of each month.
A Memory-Cafe is where there is a warm welcome for people with dementia or other problems associated memory loss (and their families / carers), who's new memories may be partial and confusing. The aim is to evoke old memories that are complete and comfortable through, for example, refreshments in china cups, photos and documents from past years, songs and poems and informal talks.
Next month doors open on 3rd May 2013.
