Rotary helped out again at the Wheels of Nairn event in September - a great, now annual, event, featuring over 300 classic and modern cars and motorbikes on display by their proud owners. This year we were supporting the Nairn Beach Wheelchairs charity, which is providing special beach wheelchairs for people with disability.
Nairn Rotary Club had its usual stall at the recent Summer Street Fair on Nairn High Street, and raised money for the charity Sport and Thought which is working in Nairn Academy. Sport & Thought is a specialist model of group psychotherapy for
adolescents that uses football as a way of engaging young people who
find it difficult to engage in traditional ways. The model helps young people who struggle to regulate their emotions,
and those who are finding it difficult to secure a foothold in school. Overall the Club (ie the people who support us, you) have contributed £1000 to Sport and Thought in Nairn. The picture shows one of our lucky winners of the whisky box - a single malt whisky to enjoy at their leisure.
Polio is a terrible infectious disease which mainly affects children It can lead to the permanent paralysis of various body parts and can ultimately cause death by immobilizing the patient's breathing muscles. Largely as a result of the work of Rotary worldwide, the disease is almost eradicated.
Being July, (the time of year when Rotary clubs change their officers), existing President Laurie Fraser handed over to incoming President Declan Flynn. Here they are shaking hands!
The Club held its AGM and Club Assembly on 17 May last year. In giving his President's report, President Ian Bryce expressed his thanks to KenGrant and Yvonne Cotter for their excellent work and commitment in chairing the ‘CSSE’ and ‘MYP’ Committees and organising the many activities which took place during the year despite the ever presence of Covid.
Notwithstanding Covid, the Club was able to raise £15,000 towards Nairn CAB’s Community Digital Access Hub. While the funds are still held on the Club’s trust account it is expected they will be disbursed by the end of September at the latest. Great work was also undertaken by many of our members in making Christmas that bit special for those most in need in the community through the provision of Christmas hampers, and gift bags for local children. President Ian also expressed his thanks to Brian for representing Nairn Rotary in the Rotary Club of Perth’s Classic Car Tour which helped raise significant funds for various charities.
A lot of hard work was undertaken by many members to completely revamp the Rotary Flowerbed including new signage celebrating our 75th Anniversary. Additionally, many contributed to the Rotary Exhibition at the Nairn Museum, which was still showing and well worth a visit. In the month ahead we will have our Anniversary Lunch at the Sun Dancer restaurant and participate in the Nairn Jubilee Street Market and the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Community Picnic. These events will give us several opportunities to proactively raise the profile of Rotary within our community as we celebrate 75 years in Nairn.
Finally, President Ian thanked all members of Council for supporting him over the past year and our Secretary and Treasurer in preparing reports and keeping the Club on track in delivering on various objectives and targets throughout the year.
President Ian (above) thanked the Chairs Ken and Yvonne of the Club's two hard working Groups. Along with their teams they had kept the vision and energy of the Club alive, organising and processing the many activities which do not just happen by chance.
The meeting also welcomed James Milton, Area Assistant Governor (elect) (shown ABOVE) from District, who confirmed his ongoing support for the Club. He emphasised that he should be regarded as the first point of contact with District, and he would welcome being actively engaged in helping and supporting all clubs within his designated Area. He would hope to attend three meetings annually with each club including Club Assemblies and he will be attending Nairn's 75th Anniversary Lunch on 24th May.
James also highlighted the importance for members to attend relevant training events and utilise the many trainings/online sessions available via the My Rotary website. He also emphasised that each club should keep a record of their activities and achievements throughout the year with the aim of securing a Citation in recognition of their efforts. In this regard he emphasised his support and help to make our Club successful in the year ahead.
President Ian on behalf of the Club thanked James for his presentation and together with President Elect Laurie and all Club members looked forward to working with him to achieve a very successful 2022/23.
Some of you may havenoticed that the Rotary rosebed, on the entrance to Nairn from the Inverness end, has disappeared, and in its place is a rather empty-looking expanse of earth. Well that is changing, as we start to prepare the way for an exciting new decorative bed designed by our great friend Annie Stewart who has done so much for the other flower beds around Nairn. Over the past few weeks, preparatory work has been going on - putting in large amounts of manure, rotovating and digging over, and now finally the start of the planting as the bed begins to take shape.

First stage - apply loads of manure and mix thoroughly!

Marking out the bed with canes - to match up with the planting scheme
