President Colin's reflections on Rotary

“What has Rotary done for me?” asks President Colin Chrebelski.

For most of my life I've lived in and around Cambridge. Born in Hampstead and raised in Romford, I've called Impington home for more than 50 years. My career took me through retail management before I established a people development consultancy, working with many of Cambridge's world-leading science and technology businesses to help develop their people and leadership teams.

When I joined the Rutherford Rotary Club a few years ago, I discovered much more than another voluntary organisation. I found a welcoming group of people who enjoy each other's company, share a desire to make a positive difference and believe that retirement should be a beginning rather than an ending.

Rotary has introduced me to new friendships, fresh experiences and opportunities to keep learning while using the skills I've gained over a lifetime. Whether we're supporting local charities, organising community projects, helping young people develop their potential or simply enjoying good company over a meal, there's a real sense of belonging and shared purpose.
Many people later in their career wonder how they'll replace the friendships, stimulation and sense of achievement that work has provided. Rotary offers all of these, along with the satisfaction of knowing that your time and experience are helping improve the lives of others. There is no pressure to be someone you're not—everyone contributes in their own way, according to their interests, skills and availability.

I'm especially proud that our club is thriving at a time when many voluntary organisations are finding recruitment difficult. Our membership is growing, our programme is varied and enjoyable, and we're continually looking for new ways to serve our community while ensuring members enjoy being part of the club.

As President this year, my priorities are simple:

Helping more people discover Rotary and understand how rewarding it can be to become part of a friendly organisation that makes a real difference in our local community.

Using technology more effectively to improve the way we communicate, organise projects and stay connected with members and supporters.

Welcoming new members from all backgrounds who are looking for friendship, purpose and the opportunity to give something back while enjoying themselves.
