We were honoured to be welcomed to the Town Hall by the Mayor of Nuneaton & Bedworth, Bhim Saru, who generously gave us his time for a personal tour of the building.
From the moment we stepped inside, it was clear that the Town Hall is far more than just an administrative centre — it is a place steeped in history and civic pride. The Mayor guided us through several parts of the building before leading us into the Council Chamber, where many of the borough’s most important meetings take place. The Chamber itself is an impressive space, specially designed in the style of a traditional cabinet room. Sitting there, you could almost feel the weight of the decisions that have shaped the community over the years.
As we explored, Bhim shared fascinating insights into the history of the borough, including how two separate councils came together to form Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council. Hearing about the evolution of the council gave us a deeper appreciation for how the area has developed and adapted over time.
One of the highlights of the visit was seeing the architect’s mock-up of the town’s regeneration plans. The Mayor talked us through the vision for the future, explaining both the original proposals and the adjustments that have already been made along the way. Plans continue to evolve — for example, a Padel Sports Centre is now set to be included instead of the originally proposed cinema. It was genuinely exciting to hear about the ambition behind the regeneration and to imagine how these developments will soon begin to take shape in real life.
After the tour, we were invited into the Mayor’s Parlour for tea — a truly special experience. The room is filled with gifts and souvenirs presented over the years by visiting dignitaries, community groups, and previous Mayors. Each item carries its own story, and it was fascinating to hear about the meaning behind the different gifts. One particularly memorable item was a football trophy said to be more valuable than the FA Cup — something Colin was especially knowledgeable about!
We enjoyed chatting about the various trinkets and treasures displayed around the room and were even set a challenge: to find the gift from Nuneaton Rotary Club. After some enthusiastic searching, Steve proudly located it!
It was a thoroughly engaging and inspiring visit. Learning about the borough’s rich past while hearing about the bold plans for its future left us feeling both informed and optimistic. We look forward to seeing these regeneration plans come to life and to watching the next chapter of Nuneaton and Bedworth’s story unfold.
