Success in the 'The Den' for local groups
ROTARY DRAGONS HELP COMMUNITY GROUPS
Eight local community groups met with members of Wigan Rotary Club on Wednesday night to pitch for up to £500 each. Groups ranged from football teams to a Samba Band; from young people’s drama and dance sessions to a therapy group for MS sufferers;
In announcing that all groups had been successful in their bids, Wigan Rotary President Gwyneth Millard, commented ‘that the one common factor amongst all the applicants was the sheer unbridled enthusiasm shown by those who pitched for their share of the money’. She wished the teams success in the future.
She continued ‘however this event would not be possible without the generous donations of the Wigan residents mainly last December when we accompanied Santa and his sleigh around the area. We hope this event shows we are using their donations wisely and for the benefit of the local community.’
The successful groups were
‘Create Sparks’ based at the Old Courts are 3 drama groups with 6 trained teachers and 35 young people some with special educational needs and mental health issues They focus on growing confidence and creativity and want new stage blocks.
‘True Levellers’ are building a Samba band and learning tunes by rhymes. They were at Community Day and sent this letter

Wigan True Levellers Community Samba Band’.
‘Wigan Stars’ want some disco equipment so members who have a wide range of complex isssues can experience being a DJ.
‘Wigan M.S. Therapy centre’ provides a fully accessible gym, raiki, massage, craft mornings. They want a water heater for drinks. They were at Community Day.
‘Highfield Grange Football Club’ their grant will start them off for the new season. They are all under 10 years old. Full details are on their facebook site.
‘Wigan Cosmos Football Club’ aim to change lives by using the power of sport. They wanted some portable goal posts. ‘Greenslade Community farm’ is an educational resource on the different ways of growing food especially organic. D of E and School groups help plant new species of tree on the 30 acre site and care for the animals. They want to buy some donkeys and woodworking tools. Their website is full of pictures of cuddly animals and practical things happening all through the year. Well worth a look.
‘Clifton St Community Centre Sunday luncheon club’ provide 40 elderly local residents with an opportunity to socialise and enjoy a good healthy meal, freshly cooked from locally sourced food. They were looking for cutlery.
