Wigan Community Day big a hit

A vibrant event in the town centre will bring the whole community together thanks to partnership working with the voluntary sector.

With support from Wigan Council, Wigan Rotary Club has arranged a ‘Community Day’ on Saturday 7th July, 10am-4pm, which will see more than 80 stalls take pride of place along Standishgate and Market Place.

Public services, community organisations and council services will line the streets while entertainment is provided by local groups, including The Old Courts.

Councillor Chris Ready, cabinet member for communities at Wigan Council said: “Through The Deal, we’re committed to bringing communities together to build a stronger borough.

“We were more than happy to work with the Rotary Club to organise the event, which will bring a vibrant atmosphere to the town centre.

“The Community Day gives voluntary and community organisations to showcase the fantastic work they are doing in their local communities, raise money for their organisations and maybe even recruit some more volunteers or service users.

“The Wigan town centre community day promises to be a fun day for the whole family and follows the Leigh town centre community day earlier in June.

“We hope people can do their bit by coming down to the event and supporting the local community.”

John Wright, president of Wigan Rotary Club said: “This is the fifth year we have organised this event and each year it becomes more popular and we get fantastic feedback.

“We arrange the event because we think it’s important to give back to the local community and it is always well attended

“It’s great to have support from the council to make this year’s event even bigger.

“We have been helping the Wigan community since 1924 and this is just one way of us carrying on the tradition.”

The French delegation from Wigan Borough’s twin town, Angers, will also be around on the day as they celebrate 30 years of twinning.

Wigan Borough and Angers will reaffirm their commitment to each other at the event by signing another charter and with the launch of a specially brewed beer by Holgates brewery, which will be announced on stage.

To follow the event unfold on the day, follow ‘Wigan town centre’ on Facebook.
