The award recognises the work of the Brick in Wigan
Members of Wigan Rotary Club visited the ‘Brick’ recently to see the wonderful work that they do amongst local people, who find themselves in difficult circumstances.
Over many years of service to the local community they have expanded their help and aid to now include not only emergency accommodation and shelter for the homeless but also a Food Bank, Charity Shop on Gidlow Lane and the new Community Warehouse, where people can learn new skills to help them integrate back into the community.
During the Visit President of Wigan Rotary Club, Keith Trencher, presented Manager, Trish Green , with a ‘Certificate for Community Service' in recognition of the ‘ Bricks' outstanding commitment to those in need in the borough.
The work of the Brick
The Brick helps and supports people from the streets to independent living.
People living on the streets have often done so for many years, and to expect them to suddenly want to live in a house with all the responsibilities that brings is like expecting an elephant to live in a tree!
Work like this takes a long time and during that time we build relationships with them and try to keep them safe.
The Brick also work with people who are new to the streets. Many of these are young and frightened about what has happened to them. We allow them a stay in an emergency bed and work with them to find more settled accommodation over the next couple of weeks. Between June this year and October last year when this particular focus started, we have housed 59 people.
Once people are housed we provide them with furniture and support to maintain their tenancy. This support lasts anything between a few weeks and 2 years. Each person has different needs and we cater for everyone differently. Some of our clients have gone on to find work or volunteering opportunities with our support and we are proud of the progress they have made.
Underpinning all this is our building where staff have a base. We welcome people calling in for help and we have dedicated staff and volunteers who are on hand to offer advice and help. For some it is a telephone call to stop their gas or electric being cut off, some need help to stop an eviction or to relocate. Others come to pick up a food parcel or meet with a counsellor, the mental health team or other services.
Each person is treated with dignity and respect and our interview rooms are readily available for privacy.
